Harvard, Illinois

Harvard is a city located in McHenry County in the northeastern corner of the U.S. state of Illinois, approximately 7 miles (11 km) south of the Illinois / Wisconsin border. The population was 9,447 at the 2010 census.

In 1942, Harvard instituted an annual celebration called Harvard Milk Days, a lavish parade down whitewashed streets presided over by a large fiberglass Holstein cow named (since 1970) Harmilda.

Harvard is home to the Thorium Energy Alliance, a non-profit devoted to education and advocacy of thorium as a very safe energy source.

What's really strange and irritating is if you go to the Woodstock bakery they have cookies, sandwiches, and salads which aren't offered at the Harvard bakery, even though everything sold at Woodstock is made at Harvard.

Two lights were installed in the center of the park and put into service in September 2014 at a cost of $5800. Prior to this time there were no lights. Information source - The Harvard Main Line Newspaper, October 10, 2014. Page 5.

Before this building became the main office of St. Joseph Parish it was the Delos F. Diggins Library, the first library building built in McHenry County.
  • Uninhabited Commercial Building (Former Motorola Plant), harvardite79 wrote 10 years ago:
An article on the front page of the September 19, 2014 edition of "The Harvard Main Line" newspaper reports that the current owners of the property (Optima International) are no longer maintaining the grounds. Also, electrical power to the building has been turned off and property tax installments due on June 4, 2014 and September 4, 2014 have not been paid. The Director of the Harvard Economic Development Committee (Charles Eldridge) is concerned that power shutoff, which ends basic HVAC systems which move air within the building, will result in mold growth which will significantly lower the building's worth.
